Follow the whistle,
meet the wings.

Hi, I'm Nick the Eggineer

As a dad in his thirties, it was only natural that I got into birds.

During those first months with my daughter, our walks became flight plans. My tiny pilot in the stroller would point us to every chirp, and we answered them all, meeting our feathery neighbors one by one. The Black-capped Chickadee ran morning roll call; the American Robin punched out at sunset. While plenty of folks were catching digital monsters that year, we caught music - sounds, snapshots, and names. I didn't fall for birding in a stack of field guides; I learned it in call-and-response, ears first, right outside our door.

Why Not Bird by Doing?

I eggineered the app, Wings & Whistles, as a tool for my friends and family to learn birds with me in a more playful way. Record the chirp, learn the bird, and sustain that curiosity. I'm not an ornithologist. I'm an intermediate birder who wanted there to be a fun entry-point to birding!

Take a peek under the wing and see how the app works before downloading it.

What We're Here For

Make the birding world more accessible

Beginning used to be the hardest part. Our free iOS app is a download away! Sorry, Android, coming soon! Subscribe to our newsletter for updates.

Get more people outside

Our communities are chronically online. Take a 10-minute loop and understand the world around you. Listening from your stoop counts too.

Learn by playing

A little gamification nudges you to keep going (streaks, surprise rewards, and birding with your buddies).

Celebrate seasonality

Birds are the world's most punctual calendar; become more in tune with nature through birds.

Trusted Birding Sources

When you want deeper research or field-guide goodness, lean on trusted sources from Cornell Lab of Ornithology like All About Birds, and Birds of the World.

I'm actively building the nest and adding new features! Stay tuned with our monthly newsletter.

Help Our Upward Flight

Everyone deserves a way in. Whether you're pushing a stroller, using a mobility aid, or listening from the couch, you're welcome here. If something would make your birding easier, tell us. Seriously.

Memories from the Stroller

My daughter may never remember those first bird calls, but I will, and the app will, too. Wings and Whistles stores these moments and becomes a part of our bird database! Never forget the first time you heard a Killdeer. Revisit the Wood Thrush calls from your trip to Rockefeller State Park.

Follow the whistle. Befriend the wings.
