Pro tips

  • Avoid wind and crowds; cup your hand to shield the mic.
  • Take a second recording if the bird changes song or distance.
  • Practice on common birds you already know to train your ear.
  • Microphone permission: iOS → Settings ▸ Privacy & Security ▸ Microphone → allow Wings & Whistles. Apple Support
  • Too noisy: move closer, face the bird, try again during a lull.
  • Very short/long clips: aim for 5–10s—long enough to catch a phrase, short enough to avoid noise.
  • Make sure your case or finger isn't covering the bottom mic.
  • Disconnect Bluetooth headsets while recording (they often use a lower-quality mic).
  • Check iOS Local Network permission if you use any casting/nearby device features. iOS → Settings ▸ Privacy & Security ▸ Local Network. Apple Support
  • Turn your volume up; ensure Silent/Focus modes aren't muting media.
  • Try a different clip to rule out a one-off bad recording.
