What the American Crow song sounds like
A string of hoarse, ringing caws that carries a long way. It sounds bold, blunt, and instantly familiar.
“caw-caw-caw, caw-caw!”
Birders often file this one under Series of Caws.
How to find the bird singing it
They thrive almost anywhere with trees nearby—woodlots, farm fields, suburbs, city parks, and open country. You'll often spot them feeding on the ground or perched high where they can watch everything.
- Breast & Underparts: From below, the bird looks solid black, but in good light the feathers can flash a blue or blue-green sheen. That cool gloss is easiest to catch on the body and wings when the sun hits just right.
- Bill & Head Shape: Look for a stout, straight bill and a smooth, rounded forehead. Compared with a raven, the bill is lighter and less deeply curved, and the shaggy nasal bristles cover less of the upper bill—ravens show a bulkier bill with bristles reaching about halfway along the upper mandible.
- Tail & Flight: In flight, the tail spreads into a broad fan rather than a wedge. Wingbeats are steady and purposeful, and the bird usually flies level instead of soaring with long, floating glides.
When you'll hear it
Spring
Pairs strengthen bonds, nests go up in trees, and family territories get noisier. Watch for adults carrying sticks or food and giving sharp scolding calls near the nest.
Summer
Parents and helpers feed begging young, and family groups roam together once fledglings leave the nest. Fresh plumage can look glossy and rich in bright sun.
Fall
Small family groups start gathering into bigger flocks, especially where food is plentiful. Harvest fields, lawns, and roadside edges can be busy with feeding crows.
Winter
This is the season of giant evening roosts in many areas. By late day, streams of crows may fly toward shared roost sites, calling back and forth as they go.
Don’t confuse it with
Birds whose song gets mistaken for this one. Play them back to back.
